ESET and REINER SCT cooperate for more security in online banking

Jena, April 10, 2024 – The European IT security manufacturer ESET and REINER SCT are joining forces. REINER SCT, based in the Black Forest, specializes in hardware security solutions such as smart card readers, 2FA hardware and TAN generators. The aim of the partnership is to increase protection for end customers in everyday digital life and especially in online banking. To this end, ESET and REINER SCT are combining their expertise and are now offering two product packages consisting of ESET HOME Security Premium and hardware authenticators and TAN generators from REINER SCT. The bundles are sold via the joint distribution partner ALSO and are available immediately.

“REINER SCT is the market leader in TAN generators. In combination with the secure online banking of ESET Home Security Premium, we protect our customers from threats that lurk in digital financial transactions, including data theft and financial losses,” says Peter Neumeier, Director of Channel Sales DACH at ESET. “‘Security Made in EU’ has always been an important topic for us, especially in these turbulent geopolitical times. Like ESET, REINER SCT has been established on the market for several decades and enjoys an excellent reputation. We share the same values. These include, in particular, the passion for greater security that drives us.”

“The cooperation between ESET and REINER SCT, two market leaders in the field of IT security, not only strengthens our positions, but also sets a new standard for security solutions on the market. By combining our technologies and expertise, we offer our customers a comprehensive security package that guarantees maximum protection and reliability,” says Thomas Peter, Head of Sales IT Channel at REINER SCT.

Two bundles for maximum security at software and hardware level

The right protection software in combination with supplementary hardware can significantly increase security for users. Cooperation with a partner in the hardware sector is therefore a logical step. From a technical point of view, the software solutions from ESET and the hardware from REINER SCT complement each other and thus offer customers and partners significantly more protection.

Together, ESET and REINER SCT are offering partners and customers two attractive product bundles:

  • The Banking package contains the tan® photo QR TAN generator from REINER SCT, which has been tried and tested millions of times, and ESET HOME Security Premium. The tan® photo QR is a TAN generator that is used for secure online banking transactions. ESET HOME Security Premium offers users multi-layered protection against cyber threats, e.g. thanks to anti-phishing. In addition, financial transactions are encrypted and insecure search results are flagged as such for users. Price (gross): RRP 79.90 euros.
  • The Authenticator package offers ESET HOME Security Premium and the new REINER SCT Authenticator mini, a 2FA hardware with TOTP that can secure over 100 online accounts. In combination, the two solutions protect end users’ devices against account takeovers and data loss. Price (gross): RRP 112,50 Euro

Further bundles planned.

The two packages for private users are just the beginning of a successful collaboration between REINER SCT and ESET. The two manufacturers are already planning a further cooperation for the B2B sector in the second half of 2024.

“I am very much looking forward to the start of the cooperation and to expanding it over the course of the year in order to be able to offer all customers, whether private or corporate, real added value and extra security,” Neumeier continued.

Press release from Soennecken eG: Nordanex expands solution portfolio

Overath, November 17, 2023 – The IT system house network Nordanex is expanding its solution portfolio with two additional providers. The new partners are the crisis management and cybersecurity experts Dokuworks GmbH and Reiner Kartengeräte GmbH & Co KG.

Dokuworks has complemented Nordanex’s “partner for partners” portfolio since August 2023, as the Siegen-based solution provider is also a member of the parent company Soennecken eG. Over the years, Dokuworks has built up specialist expertise in the areas of compliance, crisis management and cyber security and is now making this expertise available to the commercial end customers of other Nordanex IT system house partners. Nordanex partners themselves benefit from free initial assessments in the event of cyber attacks. The experts at Dokuworks also help to take measures to prevent cyber attacks. The Dokuworks team had already made initial contact with Nordanex partners at the Nordanex Partner Convention 2023 in Cologne, where the company took part as an exhibitor.

In October, Reiner Kartengeräte – or REINER SCT for short – joined Nordanex. The portfolio of the digital security specialist from Furtwangen includes chip card readers, TAN generators, hardware and software for two-factor authentication as well as for time recording and access control systems. REINER SCT is also a Soennecken member and joined the IT system house network at the request of Nordanex. “The requirements of commercial end customers for time recording and access control systems are increasing. One of the reasons for this is the introduction of mandatory working time recording in September 2022,” explains Nordanex Managing Director Christian Weiss. “With REINER SCT, we are positioning ourselves professionally in this area.”

By adding new providers, Nordanex promotes the further development of the network and ensures that all the latest IT technologies and services are always available to the market. At the same time, new partners have the opportunity to place their services in the network and expand their sales channels.

Barrier-free digitalization despite a handicap

Chip card reader cyber® RFID comfort FON from REINER SCT creates barrier-free working conditions for people with visual impairments and blindness

Furtwangen, November 2021: Since the digitalization of the federal, state and local governments has been required by law, the world of work in public authorities and administration has also changed. Electronic legal transactions, e-files and online administrative services are now finding their way into the previously paper-based processes of courts, authorities and local authorities.

High security standards in electronic legal transactions

Electronic legal transactions in Germany are based on the electronic court and administration mailbox (EGVP), a specially secured communication infrastructure. In addition to data encryption, a key security factor is card-based user authentication and the electronic signature of documents and files. As a specialist in this field, REINER SCT has already successfully established the cyber® RFID komfort chip card reader on the market in close cooperation with the Federal Chamber of Notaries.

cyber® RFID comfort FON creates barrier-free working conditions

The digitization process of public authorities has so far lacked a solution that would have enabled people with visual impairments or blindness to participate in the special electronic lawyers’ mailbox (beA), special electronic public authorities’ mailbox (beBPO), special electronic notaries’ mailbox (beN), etc. without major hurdles. REINER SCT has now developed the barrier-free chip card reader cyber® RFID komfort FON for electronic signatures with signature cards especially for these people. The cyber® RFID komfort FON uses the hardware and the award-winning design of the cyber® RFID komfort and supplements it with a 2-tone audio output. Special display messages are now signaled with acoustic tone sequences and can therefore be heard by users. A keypad touch point on digit 5 is also used for orientation and facilitates input via the keypad. Barrier-free use of the entire digital process is therefore always guaranteed with the cyber® RFID comfort FON. The audio signaling supports electronic signatures with contact-based signature cards from certified trust centers. The audio output can be switched on and off as required. This means that the cyber® RFID komfort FON chip card reader can be used flexibly by people with and without visual impairments.

Tested and certified

The smart card readers with numeric keypad from REINER SCT guarantee secure PIN entry, because entering the signature PIN is, for example, a declaration of intent in the legal sense. The signature PIN must therefore be kept secret and protected against all attacks as far as possible. This is why REINER SCT chip card readers are also tested and certified by TÜV-IT, BSI and the German Banking Industry. Consequently, the barrier-free chip card reader cyber® RFID komfort FON can also be used with these applications without any problems: Online banking, eID function with the ID card, AusweisApp2, eIDAS and E-Akte Bund.

Siewert & Kau new distributor

We don’t just want sales, we want advice!

Bergheim, October 28, 2021 – Siewert & Kau, specialist for IT sales with added value, presents sustainability from the Black Forest and expands its portfolio with the product range of REINER SCT – Reiner Kartengeräte GmbH und Co. The Furtwangen-based company is the German market leader for time recording and access control systems as well as chip-based access protection and card readers.

Working from home is becoming increasingly popular. Inspired by coronavirus and encouraged by employers, many people are setting up their home office within their own four walls. In addition to secure access systems to the company network, this also requires intelligent time recording. The working time must then be recorded not only in the home office, but also in the office at the company. For Siewert & Kau, this is a market of the future, explains Markus Hollerbaum from Siewert & Kau: “In the future, it will become increasingly important to record times accurately. Of course, access control at the gate as well as at the computer also plays a major role. We are therefore expanding our portfolio with products from REINER SCT, such as time recording systems and authenticators.”

REINER SCT is the German market leader in this segment and produces chip card readers, TAN generators, authenticators, payment terminals as well as time recording and access control systems. The company, which for example develops and produces the access systems for lawyers’ and experts’ electronic court boxes entirely in Germany, does not have a direct sales organization. However, the reasons for the future cooperation between Siewert & Kau and REINER SCT go beyond sales. Thomas Peter, Sales Manager at REINER SCT: “Together with Siewert & Kau, we naturally want to do business in the market. However, it is important for us that Siewert & Kau is close to the customer and knows exactly what is required. On the other hand, we are not interested in run-of-the-mill sales, but in the advice behind it and in gaining new partners and customers. At Siewert & Kau, you can feel the power and the commitment to the respective customer, not just to sell a product from the store. The focus is on sustainable advice. The difference to all other distributors is the proximity to partners in different manufacturer areas, because the short distance to the partner is crucial.”

The Product & Sales Manager for REINER SCT, Antje Sträter, contributes her know-how in this special area. She knows the needs of customers and the market. “We want to bring the topic of time to the market. It’s a big challenge because it’s not just about time recording, but also about compliance with the legal framework, as well as vacation bookings and sick leave,” explains Antje Sträter from Siewert & Kau. “We were previously unable to offer anything in this area. Now, with the REINER SCT portfolio, we have tested products in our range.”

In general, the partners see great future potential in time recording in particular. Markus Hollerbaum: “We are tapping into a new market with REINER SCT. This has become a huge topic, especially in the coronavirus year. People are working everywhere and you need a mobile time and work recording system to be able to prove working and break times in compliance with the law. On the other hand, today you want to record precisely how many hours have gone into a particular project and what it costs at the end of the day. But this is not possible with time recording at the gate, because the days of the time clock are over.

About Siewert & Kau

REINER SCT Authenticator – secure two-factor authentication with one-time password for companies

Effective protection of company access and online services.

Furtwangen, July 23, 2021 -REINER SCT, the Black Forest specialist for secure online transactions, is expanding its secure two-factor authentication offering – the Authenticator – to include a version for business customers.

At the latest when companies introduce cloud services – and Office 365 is just one prominent example from the recent past – the topic of “secure access” becomes highly topical. The issue has gained additional momentum due to the relocation of numerous workplaces to the home office, which places additional demands on corporate security. The method of choice for companies is two-factor authentication. A procedure that is also expressly recommended by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Because logging in with a user name and password has not been considered secure for some time now.

The REINER SCT Authenticator relies on hardware-generated, time-based one-time passwords – Time-based One-Time Password or TOTP for short. Unlike classic authenticator apps on smartphones, it is immune to Trojan attacks. The accesses are securely stored in the device, the Authenticator works as an offline device without Internet access or Bluetooth and is protected against unauthorized use by PIN. As a hardware-based TOTP generator, it works with all cloud services and platforms that rely on this technology (a list with a selection of supported services and providers can be found on the website www.reinersct. com/authenticator) and secures access to corporate networks.

The function of the device is very simple for users: log in to the company account, switch on Authenticator, select account, confirm with OK. The TOTP code displayed is valid for 30 seconds. Enter code. Done. “We originally launched the REINER SCT Authenticator on the market as a consumer device with which private end customers can secure their Internet access. However, more and more companies are now requesting the solution for their employees,” explains Thomas Peter, Head of Sales at REINER SCT. Not every employee has a smartphone provided by their employer and is willing to share their personal phone for apps that they use for business. The use of hardware tokens is also often cost-intensive and places demands on the organization.

The REINER SCT Authenticator is an inexpensive and secure alternative. Because it is not only simple and intuitive to use. There are no running costs and the licenses come with the devices. Administration, configuration and roll-out are also extremely simple – in larger projects, REINER SCT also takes care of labeling the devices with customer logos or inventory numbers, for example. Due to the low costs, many corporate customers forego inventorying.

The REINER SCT Authenticator functions without any time limit thanks to its highly accurate time synchronization, even after a battery change. REINER SCT Authenticator can secure 60 accounts simultaneously.

The device can be used with a smartphone, tablet, notebook or desktop. The technology and hardware were developed and designed in Germany. The device measures 102 x 62.5 x 19 mm and weighs 92 grams.

More flexibility in access management: REINER SCT presents access control time 10

  • Control access to companies via smartphone app
  • Open doors via remote access
  • More transparency and data protection

Furtwangen, December 10, 2020 – The coronavirus pandemic means one thing above all else for many companies: they need more flexibility. The new time 10 access management system from REINER SCT makes this possible.

In times of coronavirus, many processes in offices and factories have changed: Employees no longer all come into the office at the same time, but at different times, and the owner or manager is often not present. Nevertheless, safety regulations must be observed. This requires a lot of flexibility. With the new version of REINER SCT’s time 10 access control system, this flexibility is now possible: for example, supervisors can remotely open certain entrances for employees who do not have a key to the company building. Or you can specify which employees are allowed to enter which rooms and when, e.g. cleaning staff only before the start of core hours, employees only in their own office and the printer room, IT specialists in the server rooms. With the new version, any number of such access logics can be programmed. This means that only authorized persons equipped with a transponder or chip card can access certain areas or buildings around the clock. This ensures that the company meets the legal requirements for data protection. At the same time, the company’s tangible and intangible assets are better protected.

The program runs in the background on a server and can be accessed – browser-based – from any computer. It can also be operated via a free app on a smartphone. The app is available for both the Android and iOS systems.

All access attempts are automatically logged and can also be called up on the move. This means that the person responsible always has an overview and full transparency of who has entered which rooms and when, and who has tried to gain access. The “electronic keys” cannot be copied or manipulated and automatically trigger an alarm in the event of unauthorized access. If an electronic key is lost, it can be blocked with just a few clicks without having to replace the entire locking system. New access rules can be defined just as quickly. Public holidays or other exceptions can be taken into account. Access management can be seamlessly integrated into time10 time recording.

time 10 is suitable for all industries, especially where different access regulations are useful. The system can be quickly integrated into renovated buildings or new builds, but can also be retrofitted at any time with little effort. Local authorities, for example, can equip their offices and operations, such as the building yard or daycare centers, with the system and control them centrally from one location.
The payment model for time 10 is new: companies can purchase individual licenses per workstation from REINER SCT partners for a term of one year or agree multi-year contracts including support.

40 years of online banking: REINER SCT congratulates!

Don’t underestimate the dangers for users even today

  • Don’t underestimate the dangers for users even today
  • REINER SCT advises protection with external TAN generators

Furtwangen, November 12, 2020 – Online banking celebrates its 40th birthday in mid-November. On November 12, 1980, banking transactions could be carried out from home for the first time using teletext technology (BTX). REINER SCT has been supporting online banking since 1997 as a guarantor for secure transactions.

A number of companies and private participants keen to experiment took part in the Deutsche Bundespost field test in 1980. The BTX technology was provided by the consumer bank for the greater Düsseldorf area. Even back then, the slogan was “My bank in my living room!”. Another component has also remained: even back then, participants needed an access number and a key number, known today as a user name and password. And right from the start, the transaction had to be confirmed with a one-time number, comparable to today’s authentication code. Three years later, online banking was officially launched with around 4,000 users. By 1991, 300,000 people were using the new convenience. It was not until the late 1990s that the necessary equipment became more reliable and affordable. By 1999, the number of direct connections had risen to over 1.5 million and in 2000, around 35 percent of Germans were online. In 2009, online banking became widely accepted. This was due to the introduction of the optical TAN generator. According to a 2020 survey, every second German now uses online banking; one in three of them relies on a smartphone app for their banking transactions.

REINER SCT as a guarantee for online banking security

REINER SCT was founded in the Black Forest in 1997 and has been involved in online banking from the very beginning. With its products, the company has been a guarantor of security in online banking ever since and still is today. Because as practical and indispensable as banking from home or on the move is for many people today, it also offers opportunities for criminals to attack. “We recommend using a second piece of hardware for digital transactions. With a TAN generator, users are optimally protected,” says REINER SCT Managing Director Andreas Staiger. The reason: software can only be protected with software to a limited extent. “If you want to carry out a transaction with your smartphone and have the authentication code sent to the same smartphone, you won’t experience any greater security,” emphasizes Staiger. But no one is defenceless against attacks. Even without in-depth IT knowledge, every user can protect themselves effectively against computer crime.

10 years of the electronic ID card: REINER SCT launches limited edition of the comfort reader

Furtwangen, June 23, 2020 – In November, the electronic ID card (PA) will be ten years old. REINER SCT, the specialist from the Black Forest for secure transactions on the Internet, has launched a limited edition of the 100% German-made comfort reader in stylish white to mark its milestone birthday.

On November 1, the electronic ID card (PA) with its online ID function (OAF) celebrates its tenth birthday. The implementation of the Online Access Act (OZG) is just in time for politicians to kick-start the turbo for a more comprehensive use of the OAF. The number of useful applications for “Perso” and the online ID function will increase significantly. By the end of 2022, 575 services from public authorities should also be available digitally. Every new ID card has the online ID function, which is activated when the ID card is issued and can therefore be used immediately for eGovenment.

The cyber® RFID komfort chip card reader from REINER SCT offers the greatest protection when accessing data on the ID card. The device is therefore particularly secure, as the PIN is entered tap-proof via the device keypad and the communication is securely shown on the display.

To mark the tenth anniversary of the ID card, REINER SCT has now released a limited edition of 5,000 of these readers. The device comes in stylish white. “Our devices have already won several design awards. With this edition, we’ve gone one better: it could hardly be more stylish. And what could be more fitting for the tenth anniversary of the new ID card than a device “Made in Germany”?” says a delighted Andreas Staiger, Managing Director of REINER SCT. The limited edition reader can be purchased immediately via the usual channels.
Donation to Vinzenz workshops

At the same time, REINER SCT is donating two euros per appliance sold to the “Vinzenz-Werkstätten” in Rottweil. The facility for people with disabilities has supported REINER SCT for many years in producing the cyber® RFID comfort. Before painting the device, the employees manually place the buttons on the corresponding painting templates. After painting, the employees insert the buttons into the front case of the device and screw the component to a holder.

The Vinzenz workshops, which are part of the “Vinzenz von Paul Hospital” and have branches in Rottweil and Schramberg, are primarily aimed at people with a chronic mental illness or a mental disability who cannot be integrated into the general labor market, either temporarily or in the long term. Its mission is to enable employees and rehabilitants to participate in working life, open up career prospects and thus positively perceive and shape their role in society. “The Vinzenz workshops also had to close for a few weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic. With our donation of 10,000 euros, we would like to help support the facility and also thank them for their many years of support for our readers,” says Andreas Staiger.

Further information: Due to the current corona pandemic, the donation handover is expected to take place at the end of October 2020. If you are interested, we would be pleased to invite you.

REINER SCT develops device for secure two-factor authentication with one-time password

Effective protection against identity theft and misuse of popular Internet accounts

Furtwangen, May 13, 2020 – REINER SCT, the specialist from the Black Forest for secure transactions on the Internet, has developed a device for two-factor authentication. It can be used immediately on all common platforms, such as Google, Amazon, PayPal or Facebook.

Logging into digital user accounts using a user name and password is no longer considered secure. Almost all leading online platforms therefore offer the option of registering with an additional component. The time-based one-time password procedure, or TOTP for short, is usually used for this. Many providers integrate their customers’ smartphones for this purpose and provide an authenticator app. However, smartphones only have a low level of security and so the TOTP can be spied on. Just recently, ThreatFabric, an Amsterdam-based cybersecurity firm, warned that the latest version of the so-called “Cerberus” Trojan reads security codes for two-factor authentication on infected devices. The corresponding codes would be read from the Google Authenticator app, with access data for online banking, email and crypto exchanges.

Secure common platforms

Hardware-based TOTP generators, such as the new Authenticator from REINER SCT, are a secure alternative. It can be used to immediately secure accounts on popular platforms such as Google, Amazon, GMX, Web.de, 1&1, PayPal, Twitter and Facebook. REINER SCT provides an overview of all platforms with which the REINER SCT Authenticator already works on the website www.reiner-sct.com/authenticator.

The function of the device is very simple: the customer opens the website for their customer account (e.g. www.amazon.de). In the login window, he enters his login data (usually user name and password). The customer is then asked to enter the one-time password (TOTP) during the two-step verification process. He switches on his Authenticator, selects the appropriate account (in this case Amazon) and presses the OK button. The TOTP code appears. This is valid for approx. 30 seconds. The user enters the code into the customer account and is securely logged in.

Development and production made in Germany

10 accounts can be managed with the REINER SCT Authenticator. The device can be used with a smartphone, tablet, notebook or desktop. No chip card is required. The technology and hardware were developed and designed in Germany. The device measures 102 x 62.5 x 19 mm and weighs 92 grams.

The REINER SCT Authenticator stores the access data for the logins securely in its hardware. It works without an Internet connection and therefore cannot be attacked online and the access data can therefore never fall into the hands of third parties. Its function can also be secured with PIN protection.

Compared to other solutions, the REINER SCT Authenticator has further significant advantages: It works without a time limit due to the highly accurate time synchronization and even after a battery change – other products usually have a usage period of two years due to the lack of synchronization. In addition, other products only allow the management of one account – the REINER SCT Authenticator can secure 10 accounts simultaneously. Software apps offer no or only a few backup options– if the smartphone breaks or is lost, access to the account is also lost.

BSI recommendation: 2FA

Two-factor authentication (2FA) makes a significant contribution to protecting user accounts against misuse and identity theft. The reason: If the username and password fall into the wrong hands, criminals will still not be able to compromise the account because they lack the other components. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) therefore expressly recommends the use of 2FA.

Charging management for electric vehicles successfully tested with smart meter gateway

Karlsruhe, January 29 – The FZI Research Center for Information Technology and the FZI spin-off EnQS used the BSI-certified smartHSM and the MTG value-added connector to control the charging management of a Tesla via the smart meter gateway infrastructure.

At the FZI Research Center for Information Technology in Karlsruhe, a complete smart grid cell, from the energy generator to the charging station, was set up in the laboratory in the FZI Living Lab smartEnergy. Together with the FZI spin-off EnQS, the prototypical control of a charging station via the secure communication channel of the smart meter gateway was demonstrated and tested as part of the C/sells research and demonstration project and Nils Kröner’s master’s thesis. An active external market participant (EMT) was implemented on the basis of a real smart meter gateway administration. As part of the project, the communication of the grid status according to the grid traffic light principle, the use of the feedback channel to communicate the status of the charging station, the sending of the price forecast and specific switching actions were implemented.

The BSI TR-03109-compliant communication path from the end device (wallbox) via the smart meter gateway to the value-added application was ensured in conjunction with the MTG value-added connector, the hardware security module (smartHSM) from REINER SCT and the “Controllable Local System (CLS)” control unit connected to the charging station. This enabled the project team to prove that the components used and the overall system are suitable for practical use in the scenario shown.

The safe control of decentralized generation plants, the storage of energy and the safe switching of loads, which is regulated by the Metering Point Operation Act, will probably be one of the most important applications of smart metering systems in the future. Together with MTG, REINER SCT developed the smartHSM hardware security module for this purpose, which was certified as a “mini-HSM” by the BSI in October 2017. For the prototype implementation, the FZI and FZI spin-off EnQS team supplied the application for energy management as well as the measurement and communication infrastructure. In conjunction with the MTG value-added connector as a central security and communication module, it was demonstrated that a cost-effective and scalable solution is now available for active EMTs, such as regional energy suppliers and municipal utilities, for the secure operation of value-added applications.

Based on the demonstrated implementation of the communication path between electric vehicles and active EMT via smart metering systems, further research and development work is required for the value-added use of the secure communication channel. In particular, the combination of BSI-certified communication with grid-friendly and market-oriented charging optimization will enable municipal utilities, energy suppliers and grid operators to allow their electricity customers to actively participate in the energy transition through innovative business models and also to participate financially.
