The use of eAU offers several advantages. Firstly, it enables faster and more efficient communication between doctors and employers, as the sick note can be transmitted digitally immediately. Secondly, it reduces the administrative burden, as physical documents no longer need to be managed. It also enables better tracking of incapacity for work and evaluation of statistics.
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg ruled in May 2019 that EU states must oblige their employers to fully record time in future. A ruling by the Emden Labor Court in September 2020 also reconfirmed the obligation to document working hours digitally. The ruling shows that failing to record working hours entails considerable risks.
