What is biometric authentication?

Biometric authentication can provide more security. Instead of the conventional login with user name and password, an additional factor or even a single biometric factor is used. This includes, for example, logging in with a fingerprint or the well-known Face ID from Apple. With biometric authentication systems, data is recorded, encrypted or stored. When logging in, this data is compared and if it matches, the user can log into the system and gain access. Biometric technology is now also an option for two-factor authentication. Using facial recognition or fingerprints, for example, a second factor can be used alongside the user name and password to log in to an online service or website.

What are the advantages of biometric authentication?

  • A physical factor in authentication is very secure
  • A biometric factor is as good as forgery-proof

What are the advantages of biometric authentication?

  • If the biometric features are not recognized (application problems), it is not possible to log in
  • Can be perceived as an invasion of privacy

Known methods of biometric recognition are: Fingerprint, voice authentication, retina scan or facial recognition.
