How to protect yourself from social engineering
Sensitize yourself and others to this topic
The first step in protecting yourself from social engineering is to sensitize yourself to this issue and to be aware that anyone can be deceived and manipulated and that anyone can be deceived.
Develop a healthy distrust
A certain amount of mistrust towards other people should always be present alongside politeness and respect. It is better to ask too many questions than too few if the other person has an unusual request.
Be economical and careful with information
Only disclose as much information as necessary and never give out your sensitive data by e-mail or over the phone. A bank employee or administrator will never ask you for sensitive data. If in doubt, please call your bank and ask whether the e-mail is genuine.
Do not respond to phishing emails
Ignore e-mails that ask you to enter confidential data. No reputable service sends such e-mails. Only enter log-in data on websites that are encrypted. You can recognize this by the “https://” in front of the Internet address and by the green color of the address line in the Internet browser.
